The FDA has finally banned Red Dye No. 3—a toxic artificial coloring that has been added to candies, snacks, and baked goods for over 40 years! This ban is a huge win for the health of our society, making our food supply safer.
For over 30 years, we have fought to eliminate Red Dye No. 3, a chemical linked to serious health issues. The studies have shown that Red Dye No. 3 has been linked to causing thyroid tumors in lab animals and has been classified as a carcinogen. It’s also been linked to behavioral challenges in children, including hyperactivity, attention issues, and mood swings. I have been counseling parents for decades with kids to avoid ALL artificial colors that it will make their psychological issues worse.
Despite it being banned in cosmetics since 1990, it remained in our food, wow what a powerful lobby the chemical companies like Bayer, Dow, Merck, and the food manufacturers they own like Monsanto have on our “laws”. Our politicians can be so easily bought and paid for. Think about it—this dye has been coloring the foods marketed to us for decades. Candy, fruit snacks, frostings. These of course are foods targeted to our children, getting them “hooked” at an early age so they over-consume regularly. Obesity anyone????
The good news is that the knowledgeable people are slowly making some headway to fight these insidious profit driven tactics. The FDA has ordered food manufacturers to remove Red Dye No. 3, but the transition period extends until January 15, 2027. Until then, products containing this harmful additive will still be on shelves, so YOU have to READ ALL ingredient labels.
- Read Labels Carefully: Look out for “Red Dye No. 3,” “FD&C Red No. 3,” or “Erythrosine” on ingredient lists.
- Seek Natural Alternatives: Many brands use natural colorings like beet juice, turmeric, or paprika. Choose these when possible.
- Reduce Processed Foods: Whole, unprocessed foods are the safest option for avoiding harmful additives altogether.
- Be an Advocate: Share this news with your community to help other families make informed choices.
This victory reminds us why staying informed about food additives matters so much.
